What Causes Boat Oxidation — and How to Restore That Showroom Shine

That chalky, faded look on a boat’s hull has a name: oxidation. It’s one of the most common problems we see on the Treasure Coast and in the Palm Beaches, and Florida’s climate makes boats especially prone to it.

Oxidation happens when your gel coat’s surface reacts with oxygen, sunlight, and salt over time. UV rays break down the top layer, while salt and moisture accelerate the process. The result is a dull, chalky finish that robs your boat of its gloss and, left untreated, can permanently damage the gel coat.

Boats stored outside without cover, those kept in saltwater year-round, and hulls that haven’t been waxed or coated recently are the most vulnerable. The good news is that in most cases oxidation can be reversed with the right professional process.

Restoration starts with a thorough wash, followed by compounding and polishing to cut away the oxidized layer and reveal the healthy gel coat beneath. From there, a protective ceramic coating or SiO2 treatment locks in that showroom shine and shields the surface from future UV and salt damage, so the problem doesn’t quickly return.
